Custom Software

Software shaped around your operation.

Bespoke business systems, workflow automation and platform engineering for processes off-the-shelf software cannot handle.

Custom Software Development at INTELLIA, in brief

Custom software development means designing and building an application specifically for one organization's processes, instead of adapting the business to a packaged product. INTELLIA builds custom workflow systems, operational platforms and integrations, delivered in two-week sprints with source code, documentation and infrastructure owned by the client.

When packaged software forces a workaround

Off-the-shelf tools cover the common 80 percent. The remaining 20 percent, often the part that makes your business different, ends up in spreadsheets, email chains and manual re-entry. Over time those workarounds become the real system, with no audit trail and a lot of key-person risk.

  • Core processes running in spreadsheets and email
  • Several tools that each solve part of the problem
  • Licenses for features nobody uses, and gaps that cannot be filled
  • Knowledge locked in the heads of a few staff members

Capabilities

What our Custom Software team delivers

  • Workflow and approval systems

Multi-step processes with roles, SLAs, notifications and a full audit trail.

  • Operational platforms

Systems for dispatch, scheduling, production tracking, inspections and field work.

  • Integration and middleware

Connect ERP, CRM, telephony, WhatsApp, payment and government systems through reliable APIs and queues.

  • Legacy modernization

Replace aging desktop or web systems step by step, without a risky big-bang cutover.

  • Product engineering

Turn an internal tool or idea into a commercial SaaS product with multi-tenancy and billing.

  • White-label builds on our products

Start from one of our 13 products and customize it, cutting delivery time significantly.

Our approach

How a typical engagement runs

  1. 1

    Discovery sprint

Two to three weeks of workshops, process mapping and prototyping that produce a scope, architecture and estimate.

  2. 2

    Thin vertical slice

The first sprints deliver one complete workflow end to end, proving architecture and integrations early.

  3. 3

    Iterate with users

Fortnightly demos with the people who will use the system, and a prioritized backlog you control.

  4. 4

    Quality built in

Automated tests, code review, security scanning and CI/CD from day one.

  5. 5

    Transition

Data migration, training, documentation and either handover to your team or ongoing support.

Build, buy, or build on top of a product?

There are three realistic options for most new systems, and the best answer is often a mix.

Option Speed Fit Long-term cost Choose when
Buy SaaS Fastest Generic Ongoing per-user fees The process is standard and not a differentiator
Build fully custom Slowest Exact Maintenance and hosting The process is unique and strategic
Customize an INTELLIA product Fast High License or one-time fee plus support One of our products covers most of the need

How do you estimate a custom software project?

We break the system into user journeys and integrations, size each one with the engineers who will build it, add explicit allowances for testing, deployment and project management, and state the assumptions behind the number. You get a range with the main uncertainties named, not a single figure that hides risk. Our article on how to scope a software project and estimate cost explains the method.

Pricing and engagement

How we work together

We recommend a short paid discovery sprint before quoting larger builds. It reduces estimate risk for both sides, and its outputs are yours even if you build elsewhere.

  • Discovery sprint

Best for: Any project over three months

Fixed-price workshops, prototype, architecture and a detailed estimate.

  • Fixed-scope delivery

    Best for: Well-defined systems

Milestone-based price for an agreed scope, with a change process for new requirements.

  • Dedicated team

    Best for: Evolving platforms

Monthly team capacity working through a backlog you prioritize.

We do not publish fixed prices because scope drives cost. Every proposal states assumptions, inclusions and exclusions.

FAQ

Custom Software: common questions

When is custom software better than an off-the-shelf product?

Custom software is worth it when the process is central to how you compete, when no product fits without heavy workarounds, or when integration and licensing costs of packaged tools exceed the cost of building. Our guide on custom versus off-the-shelf software walks through the decision.

How much does custom software cost?

Cost depends on the number of user roles, workflows, integrations and non-functional requirements such as security and availability. After a discovery sprint we provide a fixed price or a team-based estimate with a range, never a number pulled from a template.

Who owns the source code?

You do. Source code, infrastructure scripts, documentation and design files for custom work are transferred to you, and repositories can live in your own Azure DevOps or GitHub organization from day one.

How do you handle changing requirements?

In sprint-based engagements, you reprioritize the backlog every two weeks. In fixed-scope projects, changes go through a lightweight change request with impact on time and cost stated before work starts.

Can you work with our in-house developers?

Yes. We often work in mixed teams, sharing repositories, standards and ceremonies, and can lead architecture while your developers own parts of the system.

What happens after launch?

You can take over maintenance with the documentation and handover sessions we provide, or keep us on a support agreement with defined response times.
